The best and cheapest choice is to go with SCSI. Don't bother getting a CDRW drive any faster than 4x4 or 8x8. The reason for that is your slow 3400 won't output any faster to take advantage of a faster drive. There are many brands available. I prefer Yamaha or Sony. Plextor or any Plextor-based mechanism should also be good. Most drives these days have at least a 2mb cache.
Don't even bother with pcmcia. It's slower than SCSI and more expensive. In truth, your 3400c, while fully loaded, is getting long in the tooth. An external CDRW drive is a worthwile investment but you might consider checking out the new iBooks. You can get one for abour $1600 that has a CDRW drive built in! And of course you'd also be moving up to a G3 running at 500mhz! Anyway, hope this helps! D.J.
