Got Fire? - Just Who is Onboard With FireWire?
......Well, most everyone!
More and more, Developers, Computer & Home Electronics Manufacturers and others are becoming IEEE 1394 Trade Association Members. If you are not aware of it the 1394TA was founded in 1994 to support the development of computer and consumer electronics systems that can be easily connected with each other via a single serial multimedia link.
We present this partial list as evidence in reference to the recent guest editorial written by MacRocks.com Editor Cris Dunnam at The Tapeless Studio site -- where in our fearless leader offered an olive branch and a good dose of Mac-spun reality to those who are mainly PC (WinTel) users. They who might be tempted to overlook the potential of the iMac and new iMacDV.
Just to let them know what's coming to their platform once MS & Intel have a good distance between the protocol and the originator's name we present this short list of some of the trade association members.
Apple Computer, Inc.
Apple first included FireWire drivers in OS 7.5 or so in 1994. Since July 1997, when Apple shipped Mac OS 8, FireWire has become an integral part of the Mac OS. Beginning in May of 1998, Apple has been shipping FireWire PCI cards as an option on new Power Macintosh G3 computers ordered from the Apple Store. And of course, since the late eighties and continuing today, Apple is the original developer and main contributor to the IEEE 1394 protocol.
Compaq Computer Corporation
Compaq Computer Corporation, a Fortune 100 company, is the fifth largest computer company in the world and the largest global supplier of personal computers, delivering useful innovation through products that connect people with people and people with information. Compaq recently announced new systems that would include built-in FireWire ports.
Intel Corporation
Intel now has a 1394 page on its public web site.
JVC
Producing mainly audio/video consumer products as well as computer peripherals where the target is multimedea. Also developping system products that are combined with many products.
Matsushita Communication Industrial Co., LTD.
Audio-Video Group, manufacturing professional audio systems, surveillance camera Systems, and other related products. Fourth, the Automotive Electronics Group, producing car audio equipment, car navigation systems, and other products. Matsushita Communication will continue to further never-ending creative development based upon the AV & C, and systemization technology it has accumulated over several decades, and aspires to be a comprehensive supplier to the multimedia sector as we approach the 21st century.
Texas Instruments
TI was the first IC manufacturer to recognize the tremendous potential of 1394. As the 1394 solutions leader, TI continues to provide all the software and hardware components manufacturers need to capitalize on the exploding technology. TI's field-proven, third-generation 1394 ICs allow customers to get to market quickly minimizing risk to their production schedules. TI will continue to meet the growing needs of the 1394 market with products that emphasize flexibility, expandability and increased performance. With that in mind, Texas Instruments is the clear choice for 1394 solutions.
And of course not to forget Sony, who in a recent article in Wired Magazine stated they intend to implement iLink (their name for FireWire) in practically every device they make!
